Blackberries and Rice: How to Fix Your Wet Phone!

It was a night full of fun at a close friend’s vinyard in Northern California, after a few more drinks than I had planned, I washed my face and plugged my phone into the electric socket next to the bathroom sink. Mistake number 1!
“NOOOOOOO!” I woke up around 7 AM to find my phone in a puddle of sink water. I picked up the dripping Blackberry and anxiously attempted to dry it off. The phone was dead.

As I wouldn’t be anywhere near an ATT store for at least 48 hours, I knew there would be no virtual communication with anyone for the rest of the weekend. On that note, it is occasionally nice to ‘unplug’ but not when your business partner will be flying in at the end of the weekend and you are waiting on more than a few pressing emails from employees…I run an internet company, the internet never sleeps. In the words of Bleacherreport.com founder Bryan Goldberg in their ValleyGirl.tv interview, ‘The internet is like a baby except it cries more’!

I began to enjoy the rest of the weekend with fellow blogger Dessert Darling and other friends, when 2 people told me to put my phone in a pile of dry rice. One also told me to dry it out in the sun. Having no other options, I compromised and took apart the phone, put it in a ziplock bag filled with rice and laid this odd collection of items in the sun.

After 30 minutes, I moved the baggie inside due to the heat. I left the VG Blackberry in the bag untouched for a good 10 hours. That night, I returned to the rice-covered phone, put the battery back in and charged the phone (as far away from the bathroom as was humanly possible). When I woke up in the morning, the phone WORKED! I couldn’t believe it!

According to Google’s search for “phone rice trick”, there are 11,800,000 results, so I am definately not the ONLY person who has experienced this magic! The dry rice slowly absorbs any liquid. This has been known to fix all sorts of electronics as well and is apparently common knowledge amongst the teenagers of today!

Rice is NO MYTH! It saved my phone. My blackberry of course now has a few pieces of rice left on the inside and occasionally rattles, but because of the journey we have been through together, I trust my phone infinately more!

After all, who has heard of a little rice hurting an internet connection??
